Dia de descubrimientos / Discoverying day

Hoy me he sentido un ignorante.

(Evang. Juan, cap.8, vers.31)

------------------------------------------------------------

We are still in Quito, at 2.800 meters high above the sea level (you can tell that circumstance every time you walk up more than 10 steps of a stair with a "normal" beat)
Yesterday and today we kept on discoverying more about this country of which in Spain, we don't know anything at all. As I've heard just today, we are affected by the  "addiction to the ignorance", something that never opens our minds and our brains, and keep maintaining us in a parallel world, a "navel-centric" world, where what is yours, your place and your life, with your navel as the center, are definitely the most important things.

Today I felt like an ignorant. Today I have wished to know more about the ancestors that preceded us in our country (Spain), just 200 years ago, when Napoleon Bonaparte threatened to invade Spain, or later, in Cádiz when the first Spanish Constitution was proclaimed.

Right, the thing is that in the course of the ecuatorian independence museum there is plenty of atractive personalities, people that went till the end (death) with "revolutionary" ideas, in which "the people" and "other folks" were the reason or hard core in that ideology. No personal interest can be seen, yearning for power cannot be smelt, oppressed release was the only intended thing... they were plainer ideas, but not lacking of strenght and heart because of that.

What caught my attention specially was the historic character of Eugenio Espejo, "multi-subjetc enlightened" highly influenced by french revolutionary ideas, who opened the door to the independece for this country. That man carried out some actions in coherence with the things he believed and in one of his heroic deeds, made in secret and with nocturnality, he hung in 7 crosses that stand in the most centric street of Quito (I visited it), some flags that told something like:

"At the shelter of the cross be free, achieve happiness and glory"

I would never support the use of the Scriptures (the Bible) as an argument for a violent revolution or something that could ever be similar to what we call "Liberation Theology" (you can know more about it through Internet, it's so interesting). Jesus simply didn't do that way, although he lived as well among poor and oppressed people and he lived in dedication for them, he came for releasing them from his "yoke", through his own life's sacrifice, rather than resorting to violence. And he offered the same thing for those not-oppressed ones, or even for those who permited those cruelty facts: another oportunity, even when we cannot understand it.

Regardless of that, ecuatorian's revolution and independence process took some years and included a lot of battles and excesses, surely in both sides. Today, at least, I'm aware of that part of the history that we don't know and that we should, because it teaches to us that under the colours of our flag, we stripped others of their things, we wounded, we mistreated and even we killed with no compassion. We are not that nice people, as I said some months ago: neither you, nor me, nor that one. Neither the spanish, nor the chinese, nor the french.

All that happened in those early years in the nineteenth century by that place, that has made resound once again in my head the real reason of the authentic liberation that a human being can experience, in that age, before that or even today; a really bigger liberation concept, that covers as well the release of doubts and questions that hang above us about our existence and the sense of all this.

In Jesus' own words:

"If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
(John Gospel, chap.8, vers.31)
